BT is ending free access to TNT Sports for some of its long-standing broadband customers, meaning those who want to keep watching will have to pay £15 a month from October 16 – that’s tomorrow.
The change affects customers who have been receiving TNT Sports as a free app add-on, with some having enjoyed the perk since the channels were still known as BT Sport.
According to Cord Busters, BT has confirmed that the free access was part of a promotional offer, although several customers say they were never told it was temporary.
Affected users have started receiving emails titled “There’s a change to your TNT Sports Pack price”, informing them that their promotion is coming to an end. However, the announcement has caused some confusion, with customers on BT’s community forum claiming they were initially told by customer service representatives that the emails were a scam.
TNT Sports replaced BT Sport in July 2023 and offers coverage of the Premier League, Champions League, rugby, MotoGP and UFC, among other sporting events. The service also moved from Discovery+ to HBO Max in March, meaning affected BT customers now access their sports coverage through the HBO Max app.
The good news is that £15 a month is still considerably cheaper than subscribing directly. BT normally charges existing broadband customers £25 a month for the TNT Sports app add-on, while HBO Max offers the service for £30.99 on a rolling monthly plan or £25.99 with a 12-month commitment. That makes BT’s new rate a relatively good deal for regular sports viewers, even if it’s an unwelcome extra cost for those who previously paid nothing.
Customers who don’t want to pay can cancel the add-on through BT’s account management page without affecting their broadband contract, as the sports package operates separately on a 30-day rolling basis. However, those who cancel and later decide to return may lose the discounted £15 rate and have to pay the standard £25 monthly price instead.
For customers who have held onto free sports coverage for more than a decade, it’s certainly the end of a long-running perk. And while the discounted rate might soften the blow, it’s still another £180 a year added to their broadband bills.
