Microsoft has unveiled the Xbox Nano Controller, a pocket-sized version of its standard gamepad that’s small enough to take just about anywhere. Despite its tiny design, it still packs all the essential Xbox controls, making it a more portable option for gaming on consoles, phones and tablets.
Measuring just over 5 inches long and weighing 99g, the Nano is considerably smaller and lighter than a regular Xbox controller. For comparison, the standard Xbox One wireless controller measures over 6 inches and weighs around 280g without batteries. It’s even smaller than the iPhone 18 Pro, which measures 5.9 inches and weighs 211g.
The smaller size doesn’t mean Microsoft has stripped away the controls, either. The Nano retains all 18 standard gameplay inputs, with the same button and trigger layout found on a regular Xbox controller. There’s also a programmable Action Button that can be customised for shortcuts such as taking screenshots or recording gameplay, giving players some extra flexibility without adding more buttons.
Connectivity is another area where the Nano stands out. Unlike many third-party mini controllers that rely on wired connections, Microsoft’s new pad supports both Xbox Wireless and Bluetooth, allowing it to connect to compatible devices without an additional wireless adapter. It also comes with a rechargeable battery, making it a convenient option for anyone who wants to play on their phone or tablet while travelling.
The Xbox Nano Controller costs $50 in the US, where pre-orders are already open through Microsoft’s official Xbox website. It’s also heading to other markets, including the UK, Canada and Australia, in November, although local pricing has yet to be confirmed.
Microsoft is also bundling the controller with two months of Game Pass Ultimate for customers purchasing select Samsung TVs during the holiday season. A similar offer will be available with Meta Quest headsets, giving buyers another way to try the smaller controller alongside Microsoft’s gaming subscription.
While the Nano won’t necessarily replace a full-sized controller for everyone, its compact design and wireless connectivity could make it a handy alternative for gaming away from home, particularly if carrying a regular Xbox pad feels like one accessory too many.
