YouTube is changing how you share moments from videos. In the process, it’s quietly killing off one of its lesser-used features.
As shared by 9to5Google, the platform has confirmed it is removing the ability to create new Clips. At the same time, it is rolling out a more straightforward “share at timestamp” option on mobile.
Clips have been around for a while, letting users cut short segments from longer videos to share elsewhere. They’ve been particularly useful for creators trying to promote highlights or key moments. But despite that, YouTube is now shifting direction. Existing Clips will still work, but you won’t be able to make new ones going forward.
Instead, YouTube is leaning into simpler sharing. The new timestamp sharing feature, already familiar to desktop users, is now being properly rolled out across phones and tablets. It lets you send a video link that starts at a specific moment, without needing to create a separate clip. The option sits in the top-right corner of the share menu. This makes it much quicker to grab and send.
At the same time, YouTube says it isn’t abandoning clipping entirely. It is just moving it closer to creators. The company also plans to introduce more creator-focused clipping tools in 2026. These features include those already available in YouTube Studio that let creators republish segments from long-form videos or past livestreams.
Furthermore, these tools are expected to expand into Shorts later this year. There will also be auto-suggestions that highlight the most “clippable” moments.
So while Clips as a user-facing feature are on the way out, the core idea isn’t disappearing. Instead, it’s just being streamlined for viewers and handed back to creators — with timestamp sharing stepping in as the faster, no-fuss alternative.
