Google Messages is finally getting one of its most requested features, such as custom chat themes with wallpaper backgrounds.
Google has started rolling out a new Chat theme option that replaces the older Change colours setting. This gives Android users much more control over how individual conversations look.
The update lets users choose from a range of Dynamic Colour-inspired palettes for message bubbles and accents. It also adds full-screen wallpaper backgrounds. Google is including a selection of built-in categories such as Animals, Architecture, Black & White, Cityscapes, Landscapes, and Macro. Additionally, there is the option to pick a photo from your own gallery.
Unlike some messaging apps where theme changes are visible to both participants, Google says only you will see these customisations. That means you can personalise chats without affecting how they appear on the other person’s device.
Moreover, the new interface also includes a live conversation preview at the top of the settings screen. This makes it easier to see how colours and wallpapers will look before applying them.
This is a notable upgrade over the current customisation system. Google introduced the current system in 2024, but it only offered nine preset colour combinations for chat bubbles and backgrounds.
Google hasn’t announced a full release timeline yet, but the feature is already appearing for some users through a staged rollout. If it’s available on your device, you’ll notice that the old Change colours option has been replaced with Chat theme.
Custom themes and wallpapers have long been standard features in apps like WhatsApp, Telegram, and Messenger. Therefore, this update brings Google Messages a step closer to the level of personalisation Android users have been asking for.
For now, the rollout appears to be gradual, meaning some users may receive access to the feature weeks before others. As with many Google updates, availability is likely being expanded in stages, so it could take some time before it reaches all eligible devices worldwide.
