Shanling’s M0 Pura is a Hi-Res audio player that looks like an iPod Shuffle

Shanling has introduced the M0 Pura, an ultra-compact hi-res music player that packs a lot of hardware into a body barely larger than the old iPod Shuffle.

Despite weighing just 35.8g, it supports high-resolution audio and dual DACs. In addition, there is Bluetooth streaming and USB DAC functionality, making it a serious option for anyone who still prefers dedicated music players.

Priced at £129 / $129 / €129, the M0 Pura is available to buy now, replacing the previous M0 line-up with upgraded internals while keeping the same pocket-friendly design.

At its core are dual Cirrus Logic CS43131 DACs, supporting PCM audio up to 32-bit/384kHz and native DSD128 playback. Shanling says the player can deliver up to 250mW of output power into 32 ohms when paired with its optional 3.5mm-to-4.4mm balanced adapter. This provides enough power for a wide range of wired headphones.

The player features a 1.54-inch colour touchscreen running Shanling’s MTouch operating system. It is for quick navigation through albums, playlists and settings. Underneath, it’s powered by the Ingenic X1000 platform. A 650mAh battery promises up to nine hours of playback or as much as one month of standby time.

Wireless support is more comprehensive than its size might suggest. Bluetooth 5.0 works in both transmitter and receiver modes. Thus, the M0 Pura can stream music to wireless headphones or act as a Bluetooth DAC for a smartphone, laptop or games console.

Supported codecs include LDAC, aptX, AAC and SBC for transmission. When receiving audio, LDAC, AAC and SBC are available.

There’s also USB-C connectivity, enabling the player to function as a USB DAC or a digital transport for an external DAC. Music can be stored via a microSD card slot supporting capacity up to 2TB. Compatibility spans FLAC, ALAC, WAV, AIFF, APE, MP3, AAC, OGG and DSD files.

Shanling has also included a handful of useful extras. These include adjustable playback speeds for podcasts, A-B repeat, remote control through the Eddict Player app on Android and iOS, plus user-selectable screensavers and sound customisation options.

The M0 Pura ships with a USB-C cable and two screen protectors in the box. Optional accessories include a leather case, clip case and the balanced output adapter. At £129, it offers a surprisingly full feature set for a player that’s small enough to disappear into any pocket.
