Honor has shared a closer look at the camera system powering its upcoming Robot Phone.
Ahead of the handset’s official unveiling on August 12, Honor has confirmed a trio of high-end sensors. The phone will have a custom-built gimbal camera and a host of cinema-focused features developed in partnership with Arri.
The standout feature is a 200MP main camera mounted on a three-axis gimbal. This is a setup Honor says is designed to deliver smoother handheld footage without relying solely on electronic stabilisation.
The custom gimbal motor weighs just 2.6g, with the company claiming it’s 65% smaller than conventional gimbal motors while delivering 35% higher torque density. If those claims hold up in real-world use, it could make the Robot Phone one of the more capable smartphones for handheld video recording.
The 200MP camera embedded within the gimbal seems capable too, sporting a 1/1.28-inch sensor with an f/1.6 aperture and powered by Honor’s in-house Yuguang H1 image signal processor (ISP).
The company isn’t stopping at hardware, either. As the first smartphone developed in partnership with legendary German cinema camera maker Arri, the Robot Phone introduces several professional-grade video tools including native Log-C3 recording, on-device LUT colour grading, and a dedicated Cinema mode. This mode is designed to replicate the colour science and look associated with Arri’s cameras.
The rear camera array is rounded out by a 200MP periscope telephoto camera and a 50MP ultrawide sensor, giving the device an unusually ambitious imaging setup across all focal lengths. Honor also says the Robot Phone incorporates more than 100 patents, highlighting the amount of custom engineering that has gone into the project.
Outside of the camera system, previous teasers suggest the Robot Phone will feature a 6.3- to 6.4-inch display alongside Qualcomm’s latest Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 chipset and a 6,000mAh battery.
Honor is expected to reveal the full specifications, pricing and availability when the Robot Phone launches in China on August 12. Based on what we’ve seen so far, however, its cameras are shaping up to be the biggest reason to pay attention.
