Apple could raise the price of the iPhone 17 lineup as soon as August 10, according to a new leak. This could potentially bring the phones into line with the company’s other products affected by rising memory costs.
Apple has already increased prices across much of its hardware lineup this year, but the iPhone has so far avoided the impact of the ongoing memory pricing crisis. However, that could change soon. Weibo leaker Fixed Focus Digital claims Apple is considering a price increase for the current-generation iPhone 17 models.
The timing is particularly interesting. According to the leak, the change could happen as soon as today, Monday, 10 August. Although the leaker has acknowledged there is some uncertainty around the claim, this is far from confirmed and should be treated cautiously.
Fixed Focus Digital also claims Apple has cancelled a planned increase in production capacity for some products. According to the post, certain production lines currently running at 15% capacity were expected to increase to 30%. However, that expansion has apparently been shelved.
Weibo leaks aren’t always reliable, although Fixed Focus Digital has correctly reported some Apple details in the past. For example, they named the iPhone 16e ahead of launch.
Ordinarily, a price increase so close to a new iPhone launch would make little sense. Apple typically introduces its new iPhone lineup in the autumn and discontinues most previous-generation models, leaving the standard previous-generation iPhone available at a reduced price.
This year, however, Apple is reportedly changing that strategy.
The iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max are expected to arrive in September alongside the rumoured iPhone Fold. However, the standard iPhone 18 isn’t expected until spring 2027. That means Apple could keep the iPhone 17 around as its mid-range option for another six months.
That would give Apple more reason to adjust its pricing, particularly while memory costs remain elevated.
It’s unclear whether the rumoured increase would apply to the iPhone 17 Pro models as well. With those phones expected to be replaced by the iPhone 18 Pro range in September, raising their price now could make less sense.
For now, the rumour remains just that. But it sounds like we’ll find out either way sometime today.
