OnePlus 16 launch imminent with serious power onboard

OnePlus has confirmed the OnePlus 16 will launch in China on October 12, and it’s shaping up to be a seriously performance-focused phone. The company has also revealed that it will use Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6, giving us a better idea of what to expect when the phone arrives.

OnePlus had previously confirmed that the OnePlus 16 would use a Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6-series chip, but the latest announcement pins down the exact version. The Extreme Gen 6 includes a GPU with Matrix Cores, a feature reserved for this higher-end variant.

Qualcomm’s chip also supports some hefty video features, including 4K slow-motion recording at up to 240fps, 8K video at 60fps and the APV codec. OnePlus hasn’t confirmed whether the OnePlus 16 will actually use any of these capabilities, though, so those are best treated as chipset features rather than confirmed phone features.

The rest of the hardware looks geared towards gaming, too. OnePlus has confirmed a 185Hz refresh rate, alongside custom touch and Wi-Fi chips designed to improve gaming performance.

Camera hardware is getting a sizeable upgrade over the OnePlus 15, with a 200MP 1/1.4-inch main sensor, a 50MP 3x IMX882 telephoto and a 50MP ultrawide. There’s also an XPAN-style shooting mode and a Master Mode for more control over photography. A rear LED has previously been teased, although OnePlus hasn’t detailed exactly how it will work.

There is one fairly big catch for anyone outside China. OnePlus is no longer operating in the US or Europe, so there’s currently no local launch planned for either market. Buyers in those regions would need to import the OnePlus 16 instead.

Pricing hasn’t been revealed yet, but there are reasons to expect it could cost more than the OnePlus 15 in China. The Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6 is reportedly more expensive than the previous-generation Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5, while rising memory costs could add further pressure.

For now, October 12 is the date to watch. With a new Extreme-series Snapdragon chip, 185Hz display and upgraded cameras, OnePlus is clearly putting performance at the centre of the OnePlus 16.
