Apple’s new AirPods Ultra may do something AirPods Pro never could

Apple’s next big AirPods upgrade might go well beyond better sound or longer battery life.

According to fresh reports from Mark Gurman, the company is working on a new pair of earbuds, potentially branded AirPods Ultra. These could introduce something its current lineup simply can’t do: see the world around you.

This isn’t about adding cameras for photos or video. Instead, the rumoured AirPods Ultra would use infrared sensors. Similar in concept to the system behind Face ID, it gathers spatial data and feeds it directly into Siri to boost Apple’s growing push into contextual AI. This would let Siri better understand your surroundings and respond more intelligently in real time.

In practice, that could mean tighter integration with Apple’s Visual Intelligence features. These are already present on newer iPhones like the iPhone 15 Pro and later. Your earbuds wouldn’t just hear commands, they’d help interpret what’s happening around you. Therefore, this could potentially open the door to more natural interactions with Apple’s ecosystem.

Earlier speculation from analyst Ming-Chi Kuo suggested the sensors could even enable in-air gesture controls. However, Gurman now believes that feature is unlikely to make the cut, at least in the first generation.

What’s becoming clearer, though, is positioning. Rather than replacing the next AirPods Pro, these new earbuds are expected to sit above them. The “Ultra” branding, already used across products like the Apple Watch Ultra and Apple’s high-end silicon, hints at a more experimental, premium tier. This will likely come with a higher price tag than the current $249 Pro model.

Timing is still up in the air, but a September reveal alongside Apple’s next iPhone lineup is a possibility. If that lines up, AirPods Ultra could mark one of the more significant shifts in Apple’s audio strategy. It would mean moving from passive listening devices to something closer to wearable, AI-powered sensors.

It’s still early, but it is clear that Apple isn’t just trying to improve AirPods, it’s trying to rethink what they actually do.
