So Valve has just dropped their brand new Steam Controller for 2026, and this thing is pretty packed with features. We’ve managed to get our hands on one and have been putting it to the test.

First up, this thing has been built with Steam in mind, especially when it comes to Big Picture mode on your desktop. The controller very much mimics the layout of the portable Steam Deck, and that’s something I don’t mind too much. Most notably with the track pads on either side of the controller. These have been designed with RTS games like Anno in mind. You’ve got magnetic thumbsticks which have been designed to eliminate stick drift. The Grip Sense gyro can activate motion aiming inside of games, making it easier for pinpoint accuracy, however I’m unsure if you’re going to be replacing your mouse and keyboard anytime soon for this. You’ve got four customisable buttons on the rear of the handles, and everything can be customised inside of Steam Input. It’s basically PC gaming but in a living room setting and this I am all for.
The coolest features on this controller by far is the magnetic charging puck as Valve are calling it, which plugs directly into your PC and acts as a magnetic dock and wireless sensor, so you can easily charge your controller when not in use. The new Steam Controller is definitely one of the most versatile controllers ever made… but will you be switching from your Xbox or PlayStation controllers for this?
