Gemini for Wear OS could get a major upgrade soon

Google appears to be preparing a notable upgrade to Gemini on Wear OS, with early signs pointing to a more visual, animated redesign that could debut at Google I/O 2026.

The update, reportedly referred to as Gemini App UX 2.0, hasn’t been officially announced yet, but leaks suggest Google is moving beyond the current voice-first experience. They are leaning into something that feels more dynamic on the wrist. Right now, Gemini on Wear OS is fairly minimal, focused on quick responses and voice interactions. That could soon change.

The biggest shift appears to be a new visual identity. Gemini interactions may soon feature glow animations designed to show when the assistant is listening, processing, or responding. This is a small change that could make the experience feel more responsive without relying on text.

Alongside that, animated gradient backgrounds are expected to replace static screens. It gives the interface a more modern, fluid feel, very much in line with Google’s broader Material You direction. In this direction, motion and colour play a bigger role in how software feels, not just how it looks.

There are also signs of more practical tweaks. Designers are reportedly redesigning weather icons to better suit circular smartwatch displays, improving clarity and adding animation support for quick glances. This is still one of the most common things people check on their wrist.

Put together, it suggests Google is trying to make Gemini feel less like a tucked-away assistant and more like a core part of the Wear OS experience.

Nothing here is confirmed just yet, but the timing lines up. Google has been steadily pushing Gemini across its ecosystem. A more polished smartwatch experience would fit neatly into that strategy — especially at I/O, where AI and design updates tend to take centre stage.

If it lands as expected, this could be one of the bigger usability upgrades for Wear OS in a while. This would happen not by adding new features, but by making the ones already there feel much more alive.
