A fresh leak from a prolific tipster suggests that next year’s Samsung Galaxy S27 Ultra might see a significantly restructured camera system.
According to Ice Universe, Samsung might be planning on removing the 3x telephoto lens while giving the remaining sensors a “comprehensive upgrade”.
The potential departure of the 3x camera follows years of criticism levelled at the lens, which has consistently attracted complaints about its relatively small sensor size and limited real-world usefulness compared to the 5x telephoto alternative that sits within the current Ultra camera configuration.
Ice Universe, posting across Weibo and X, places the probability of the 3x lens removal at 100%, a notably firm stance for a device that remains nearly a year away from launch, though the claim carries the same caveats as any unverified pre-release speculation at this stage of a product cycle.
That confidence in the 3x removal appears to reflect early community sentiment as well, with reactions across X suggesting the change would attract less backlash than Samsung might expect, given that a notable share of Galaxy S26 Ultra users already regard the lens as the least useful camera in the system.
Beyond the telephoto restructuring, the same leak points to a broader overhaul of the S27 Ultra’s camera hardware, with Ice Universe citing an upgraded main sensor, a next-generation ultrawide sensor reportedly set to debut on the Galaxy Z Fold 8 before reaching the Ultra, and a refreshed front-facing camera among the expected changes.
The 5x telephoto lens itself would also receive attention under the reported upgrade, with a wider aperture cited as part of the improvement, while Ice Universe places an 80% probability on the main camera adopting a variable aperture system, a feature that would give Samsung greater flexibility across different lighting conditions than a fixed aperture allows.
Samsung has not confirmed any specifications or details for the Galaxy S27 Ultra at this stage, and the device is not expected to launch until early 2026.
