Samsung hints at silicon-carbon batteries for more Galaxy phones

Samsung have only just introduced silicon-carbon batteries to its latest foldables, but it could spread to more Galaxy devices in the future.

Speaking during a private media briefing following the launch of the Galaxy Z Fold 8 series, Samsung said it would consider bringing silicon-carbon batteries to other products if the technology improves the overall customer experience. While the company stopped short of naming specific devices, the comments suggest the battery upgrade won’t remain exclusive to its premium foldables.

The Galaxy Z Fold 8 and Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra mark Samsung’s first smartphones to use silicon-carbon battery technology – though rather than dramatically increasing battery capacity, Samsung has taken a more measured approach. The Galaxy Z Fold 8 packs a 4,800mAh battery, while the Ultra model steps up to 5,000mAh, despite featuring a thinner design than its predecessor.

Silicon-carbon batteries can store more energy in the same physical space than traditional lithium-ion cells. This is why rival manufacturers have used the technology to squeeze batteries exceeding 7,000mAh into foldables.

Samsung, however, appears to be prioritising efficiency and slimmer hardware over chasing headline-grabbing battery sizes.

According to Korean publication Kyunghyang Shinmun, Samsung reiterated that its battery strategy continues to focus on safety, long-term durability and reliability above all else. The company said silicon-carbon anode materials were adopted to increase energy density. However, it stressed that new battery technologies will only be rolled out once they meet its standards for stability and customer trust.

“We applied silicon-carbon anode materials to mobile phones for the first time to increase energy density. This played a role in improving battery performance,” Samsung said during the briefing. The company added that future adoption would depend on whether the technology “can help improve the customer experience.”

While Samsung hasn’t confirmed which devices could be next, rumours have already pointed to the Galaxy S27 series as a likely candidate for silicon-carbon batteries. If those reports prove accurate, the technology could become standard across much of Samsung’s flagship lineup over the next few years.

For now, Samsung’s comments stop short of confirming any roadmap. However, they do suggest the company sees silicon-carbon batteries as more than a one-off feature for its latest foldables. Rather than rushing to maximise capacity, Samsung appears intent on introducing the technology gradually, balancing battery life, safety and increasingly thinner device designs.
