Pocket Casts has finally made the jump to Apple TV, giving one of our favourite podcast apps a proper home on the biggest screen in the house.
The update means you can now pick up an episode on your iPhone during your morning commute and continue listening on your Apple TV when you get home without having to manually search for your place again. The app is available today on all Apple TV 4K and Apple TV HD models, expanding Pocket Casts’ existing lineup across iPhone, iPad and Apple Watch.
It’s a small addition on paper, but one that solves a long-standing annoyance for podcast fans. Previously, you could AirPlay or cast audio to a TV. However, there wasn’t a native tvOS app that seamlessly synced your listening progress.
Pocket Casts says the new Apple TV app delivers the same cross-device experience users already get elsewhere.
“Start something on your phone at the bus stop. Finish it on the couch that night, exactly where you left it. Nothing to re-find. Nothing to sync by hand.”
The company is pitching the app as a natural extension of its existing ecosystem. Your Up Next queue, listening history and episode progress all carry over automatically, making it easy to move between devices throughout the day.
That continuity is arguably the biggest selling point. Rather than treating the television as a separate destination, Pocket Casts is positioning Apple TV as just another screen in its growing ecosystem.
The move also makes sense for podcasts that benefit from a larger display. Video podcasts have become increasingly popular in recent years. Meanwhile, many audio-first shows now include artwork, chapter markers and transcripts that are easier to browse on a television.
Pocket Casts hasn’t announced any Apple TV-exclusive features, instead focusing on bringing its familiar interface and syncing capabilities to tvOS. The app is also free to download, matching the rest of the Pocket Casts experience.
Android TV users won’t have to wait too much longer either. Pocket Casts says an Android TV version is also on the way, although it hasn’t confirmed a release date yet.
For anyone already using Pocket Casts as their daily podcast player, the Apple TV app fills one of the few remaining gaps in its multi-device experience. It means your podcasts can now follow you from your phone to your living room as effortlessly as they already do between your other devices.
