Google now lets Mac users activate Gemini’s voice controls by holding the Function key.
That shortcut opens Gemini‘s dictation mode, which transcribes speech directly at the cursor and strips out filler words such as ums and ahs, and it delivers polished text into whatever document or field the user already has open.
Beyond that default behaviour, Gemini’s screen-aware reasoning mode lets it read on-screen content before carrying out more complex requests, such as turning highlighted notes into an executive summary and inserting the rewritten text directly into the document.
That expanded voice control builds on the native Gemini app Google released for Mac in April 2026, which introduced a keyboard shortcut to open the assistant, along with permission-based tools for analysing on-screen content.
How it compares with Apple’s tools
None of the underlying capability is entirely new, since Apple’s built-in Dictation feature already converts speech into text across Mac apps and text fields, though it lacks the layer of AI editing that Gemini now applies to the same interaction.
Apple offers similar editing functions through Apple Intelligence Writing Tools, which can proofread, rewrite and summarise selected text in supported apps, though Gemini’s main distinction lies in combining dictation, editing and screen awareness behind a single voice shortcut.
That single-shortcut approach also echoes a feature Apple has yet to ship, since Google’s screen-aware mode resembles the onscreen awareness Apple is building into Siri AI, which will let Apple’s assistant understand visible content and use that context when answering questions or taking actions.
The two assistants diverge from there, since Gemini’s initial Mac implementation focuses mainly on rewriting and inserting text within the active window, while Siri AI links onscreen content to personal context and actions across a wider range of supported apps.
That split leaves some questions unanswered, since Google has made screen awareness optional, so users can decide whether Gemini accesses what appears on the display, though the company has not detailed which macOS permissions the feature requires or whether it works in every app and text field.
Despite those open questions, Google is already rolling out the new voice capability globally in English to users of the Gemini app for macOS, and the company plans to add more languages later in 2026 – though it has yet to confirm a specific schedule.
