Some iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max owners are reporting that the Burgundy finish is starting to fade, with photos posted online showing pale patches spreading across the aluminum chassis.
The reports are already drawing comparisons with last year’s iPhone 17 Pro, where owners complained about discoloration affecting the Cosmic Orange finish, as well as some Deep Blue models. This time around, Burgundy appears to be the main culprit, although there are also reports of discoloration on Black models.
Photos shared by Reddit users show the fading seemingly starting around the camera lenses before spreading further across the phone’s aluminum frame. It’s still unclear exactly what’s causing the change, though some owners are speculating that exposure to UV light could be involved.
That theory comes from the fact that some affected phones reportedly developed the discoloration after spending time outdoors. Others are discussing possible workarounds, including keeping the phone in a case to limit exposure to the elements.
For now, though, there’s no confirmed explanation from Apple, and these remain reports from a relatively small number of early adopters. So it would be premature to say that every Burgundy iPhone 18 Pro is going to develop the same problem.
That makes it a case of wait and see for now. If the reports continue to pile up, Apple may need to acknowledge the issue and potentially offer replacements, much like it did with the previous generation.
For anyone who has just picked up a Burgundy iPhone 18 Pro or Pro Max, there’s no confirmed fix or official workaround yet. Keeping an eye on the finish, particularly around the camera area, is probably the sensible move until Apple says more.
