Google may have quietly ended support for the Pixel 6

Google’s latest Pixel update could be the last for the Pixel 6, despite the phone still being listed among supported devices. The October 2026 security patch is rolling out now, but Google’s current support information leaves some room for doubt about what comes next.

The October update is available for Pixel phones running Android 17, covering everything from the Pixel 6 series through to the new Pixel 11 lineup. Google says the rollout will happen in phases over the next week, so it may not appear on every device immediately.

That makes the Pixel 6’s inclusion particularly interesting. Google originally promised five years of OS and security updates for the Pixel 6 series, and the October 2026 patch lands right around the end of that window. So while the Pixel 6 is technically still getting this month’s update, it could be reaching the end of the road.

For everyone still using one, the October patch itself is fairly routine. Google has fixed an issue that could stop the virtual keyboard from appearing when using search fields, along with a bug that could cause audio noise or distortion in ringtones during some VoIP calls.

There’s also a camera-related fix that stops photos and videos from occasionally being saved in the wrong orientation.

Beyond those changes, the October 1 Android security patch addresses 28 vulnerabilities, while Google’s Pixel security bulletin lists another six Pixel-specific fixes.

The update follows last month’s Android 17 QPR1 release, which brought a refreshed Pixel VIP widget, wider interface changes, improved screen recording and smoother animations.

If you have a Pixel 6, you can check for the update under Settings > System > Software updates > System update. It may take a little longer to appear depending on your carrier and location.

For now, Google hasn’t explicitly said that October is the Pixel 6’s final update. But with the phone now sitting at the end of its promised support period, this could quietly be its last major stop.
