Google is giving its Pixel Buds Pro 2 and Pixel Buds 2a a useful upgrade. A new software update adds hands-free translation, Gemini voice controls and a feature that pauses your music when you fall asleep.
The update, listed as software release 6.144 on Google’s Pixel Buds support page, brings several changes to both models. However, one of the biggest additions is exclusive to the Pro 2.
The headline feature is Enhanced Live Translate. It lets users translate conversations and understand speech in another language without having to reach for their phone. The update also makes Gemini more useful, with users now able to change audio settings using voice commands.
For example, you can ask Gemini to enable Active Noise Cancellation, adjust the equaliser or switch on touch controls. There’s also a new tap-to-mute feature, but this requires the earbuds to be paired with a Pixel phone.
Another welcome addition is sleep detection. The Pixel Buds can now pause playback when they detect that you’ve fallen asleep, disable touch gestures and silence incoming notifications. It’s a small change, but a handy one if you regularly nod off while listening to music or a podcast.
Pixel Buds Pro 2 owners get an extra feature in the form of Dynamic Active Noise Cancellation. This automatically adjusts noise cancellation and audio volume depending on how well the earbuds fit in your ears to help maintain a consistent listening experience.
To get the update, head to Settings and check for new software manually. Alternatively, leave your earbuds on their charger, then the update should arrive automatically.
It’s a nice reminder that earbuds don’t necessarily need new hardware to become more useful. Google is still finding ways to improve the Pixel Buds it already sells, and this update adds several features that could make a noticeable difference in everyday use.
