Microsoft has announced a series of performance improvements for Windows 11, promising a faster, more responsive experience, especially for users running PCs with just 8GB of RAM.
The changes are part of Microsoft’s wider effort to improve Windows 11’s performance and reliability, with the company claiming the operating system is now up to 20% more responsive.
Much of that improvement comes from smarter memory management, allowing Windows to use available resources more effectively rather than relying as heavily on slower storage.
According to Navjot Virk, Microsoft’s corporate vice president of Windows experiences, the company has improved how Windows handles memory to keep more resources available for the tasks users are actively working on. This means Windows can now retain up to 2GB more active data in memory, reducing the need to move information to slower storage and helping apps respond more quickly.
The difference should be particularly noticeable on budget laptops and desktops with limited RAM. For example, on machines with 8GB of memory or less, Windows Widgets will now load only when opened, freeing up more than 200MB of memory for other applications. It’s a relatively small change on paper, but one that could make everyday multitasking feel smoother on less powerful hardware.
Microsoft has also made improvements across several familiar parts of Windows 11, including the Start menu, File Explorer, Search and Edge. Windows Update has been made less disruptive, while Windows Hello sign-in is now faster and Bluetooth connections are more reliable. The company says pairing AirPods can now take up to 15 seconds less, and users can finally reposition the taskbar to the top or sides of their displays.
Another notable change is a redesigned Windows Search experience, which Microsoft says will be faster and more capable than the current version. It’s already available to Windows Insiders, with a wider rollout planned for later this year.
While these improvements won’t turn an entry-level laptop into a high-performance machine, they could make a meaningful difference for users who don’t have the luxury of upgrading their hardware. For anyone still relying on an 8GB Windows PC, getting more performance out of the memory they already have is a welcome improvement.
